          Biography

          Émile Picard's father was the manager of a silk factory who died during the siege of Paris in 1870.

          The siege was a consequence of the Franco-Prussian War which began on 19 July 1870. It went badly for France and on 19 September 1870 the Germans began a siege of Paris. This was a desperate time for the inhabitants of the town who killed their horses, cats and dogs for food.

          It was during this siege that Émile's father died.
