Biography
Émile Picard's father was the manager of a silk factory who died during the siege of Paris in 1870.The siege was a consequence of the Franco-Prussian War which began on 19 July 1870. It went badly for France and on 19 September 1870 the Germans began a siege of Paris. This was a desperate time for the inhabitants of the town who killed their horses, cats and dogs for food.
It was during this siege that Émile's father died.

Picard's mother, the daughter of a medical doctor, was put in an extremely difficult position when her husband died.
As well as Émile, she had a second young son, and in order to support them through their education she had to find employ
